Feedback Can Be Wonderful

I know it has been too long since I last posted a blog. Although I have been busy here, the big problem has been my laptop. It stopped working a couple of weeks ago. It was a faulty charge cord. I ordered a new one, and it recently arrived. But ask any kid when they need something (like Christmas), time stretches out, and it takes forever to get here. I address this sort of thing about time in my upcoming book.

Anyway, Last week I mentioned I might be starting to write things on my phone, and I did it too. My fingers flew over the keyboard, and this blog began taking shape. Then a friend dropped me a note suggesting I use pencil and paper. I felt like a moron. That should have been my first thought.

So, why didn’t I think of hand-producing first? Ah, quite the mystery.

I should have. After all, pen and paper were the methods most writings happened for centuries. Hell, that was the way I wrote my first novels. Admittedly, they were genuinely prosaic piles of dung, but that had nothing to do with the mode of their creation. They did involve a learning curve, and they had some endearing qualities, chief among them — I worked hard on them, and I finished them. Both things are crucial for the first novels. Do you have an idea how many first novels never get finished? Could the reason be they didn’t know how to complete them? Or does the rookie author run out of ideas? It could be either.

Back to the mystery. I think the reason using a pencil didn’t pop immediately to mind was because I was in the midst of editing my latest novel, and doing that, I had to have it around for an occasional peep. I have not memorized it. I always chuckle to myself when I watch a movie in which an author can take a quote from their book and tell you the page it was on and what comes after it. Doing that is unrealistic, at least for me.

Anyway, I had to table the editing while waiting for the cord. What to do instead? What to do? I dug into my website and fixed some things; chief among them was updating my website and fixing my admin email. Do you know what happened? I became bombarded with notifications regarding feedback on my blog. Man, was I far behind! Almost one thousand responses needed reviewing.

The feedback for my blog comes in almost as fast as I can look at them. I love the support and thank you for your input, but several are just spam; some are in languages I can neither read nor speak, and still others came from responders with legitimate things to say. It will take some time. It is not that simple to go through.

There was something else I found, and it was a first for me. A lot of authors coin terms or invent a new word or expression. While I reviewed the pile of feedback from my readers, I ran across a bit of input from an old friend. In it, he used a word that came from me. It was the first time I saw the word when I had not written it—what an unexpected pleasure.

So, what was the word? It was Alphore. Alphore is a word I use to describe prime attraction or prime love. I go into detail in my metaphysical book, I’ve Been Thinking. I’ll give you an abridged version.

One of the most tricky words out there is love. What exactly is it? Aha! Not so easy. That’s because there are many types of love, which results in many words for love. The Ancient Greeks had five words for love ranging from Mania, or obsession, at the lowest level, to Agape, or the type of love one has for a spouse or maybe for religious reasons, at the highest position. I posit there is yet a higher level. This new level I call Alphore or prime love. This love creates things, sent from the Divine (however you envision the Supreme Being — God; the Is; Science; whatever you want to believe in). This Alphore comes from the Divine, creates everything either now or over the eons, and returns to the Divine.

I go into more detail in my book, and I will happily talk about it more to whoever asks. Anyway, the rest of the book visits different concepts that explain how I view the universe. The entire thing is an attempt to prod people into thinking for themselves. It works too. At least the feedback from my Beta Readers tells me so. Currently, a publisher has the book, and I’m awaiting approval; for those who don’t know, the world of publishing works at the speed of plate tectonics.

There was a time when most people who read something I wrote … well, the best way to describe it would have been visual representations of barnyard smells. As I struggled through my college English courses, through my Army years, and of course, my early writing years, I produced crap. I had a long and slow learning curve. But with every rejection, I ferreted out as much feedback as I could. Then there were the years that passed with no comment, good or bad when all I could assume was the nebulous phrase, not near good enough.

And now? There is always room for improvement.

Well damn. I’ve been rambling again. So, let me go back to my blog feedback. Several comments mentioned they could not find where to subscribe to my newsletter. They had bookmarked my website but could not find where to sign up. There is a place on almost every page where you can sign up for my newsletter. Either go to the page entitled Newsletter, or slip to the bottom of every page. If you have already signed up and you still don’t get notification mailed to you, something is wrong. Sign up again. Maybe you entered your email wrong.

Anyway, It’s a good deal. My newsletter is where I notify interested parties of a new blog post. All you have to do is give me your name, email, and anything else you want to send me, and I will let you know every time I post a blog.

The thing you need to remember is, I won’t let anyone have your information. Ever. So sign up, and you will always know when a new blog comes out. You will enjoy it.
